Scott Allen

After graduating as a radiographer, my ultrasound career began at Green Lane Hospital in 1989. While on my OE, working at Kings College Hospital, I completed my Master of Science degree in Clinical Ultrasound at South Bank University London. At Kings College, I was fortunate to be working with Dr Hylton Meire, a Radiologist who pioneered the use of ultrasound in radiology.

He believed that if you were going to do the scan, you would also need to write the final report. Writing the final report is a rare thing for a sonographer to be doing, but a great way to learn the craft of diagnosis using ultrasound.

At the same time, I worked with Professor Stuart Campbell, an Obstetrician, who trained with Professor Ian Donald, the inventor of Obstetric ultrasound, and is responsible for world-leading research and training in Obstetric ultrasound.

My first teaching job was lecturing on one of Professor Campbell’s ultrasound courses, and I kept the uncashed cheque signed by Professor Campbell. From this first experience, teaching ultrasound became integral to how I work, and I learned a valuable lesson: through preparation, presentation and questioning, the teacher learns the most!

Returning to New Zealand, I worked at National Women's and Starship Hospitals and was charge sonographer at Waitemata Health.

Over the last ten years, I achieved a Post Graduate Certificate in Sports Medicine at The University of Auckland. And specialised in musculoskeletal ultrasound by working closely with physiotherapists, osteopaths, and specialist doctors.
