Soft Tissue Ultrasound

Certificate in Allied Health Performed Ultrasound (CAHPU).

ASUM (Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine) accredited.

The Certificate in Allied Health Performed Ultrasound (CAHPU) is a credential that the ASUM Council awards to Allied Health practitioners who are not imaging specialists but may use ultrasound as an imaging tool at the point of care. The CAHPU represents a level of proficiency in image acquisition, optimisation, and ultrasound skills relevant to the medical specialty area. The qualification structure, as well as their fees and requirements, can be accessed here.

The module students enrol in is called “Soft Tissue for Physiotherapists”, but this doesn't exclude other Allied Health professionals (for example, osteopaths, nurse practitioners, and podiatrists) from enrolling.

To complete the qualification, you must pass the ASUM's self-paced physics online tutorial and satisfactorily complete all practical and applied theory taught in-clinic at Sound Experience, Mt Albert, Auckland. ASUM gives you two years to complete all the requirements of the qualification.

The broad structure of the practical teaching is as follows:

  • ASUM requires 80 logged examinations, with a specified regional (joint) minimum.

  • We offer 100, some of which will be observations. Most examinations will be on symptomatic patients, though some may be on a model if required.

  • We estimate this will require 10 days total of attendance in the clinic, divided into half-day sessions.

  • The Sound Experience component of the qualification costs $9,600, not including ASUM's fees.
